September Awareness: Dental Implants and You
Did you know that September is Dental Implant Awareness Month? In the world of dentistry, we’ve found a number of was to promote amazing smiles and oral health, with good reason. These gentle reminders help us, as professionals, to educate patients about oral health. At the same time, these months bring to light the ease in which it is to get a great smile. Our Playa Del Rey dentist team loves giving our patients the smiles they’ve always wanted and dental implants provide a fantastic foundation to make that happen.
Dental Implant Basics
Dental implants are used in many of our Playa Del Rey dentist procedures. The implant is a post, so to speak, that is fused to your bone in order to act as the root of the tooth. We typically refer to the bottom part of this post as the fixture. It provides the base for what will be your new synthetic tooth. The top part of the post is referred to as the abutment. Dental implants can replace one tooth or act as a support for dentures or bridges. In the case of a dental implant where only one tooth is being replaced, a crown is placed on the abutment. This helps hold the crown in place. The crown is the part of your tooth that is visible.
Are You a Candidate for a Dental Implant?
A patient can lose a tooth for a variety of reasons. A facial or head injury may have broken or knocked it loose. Medications or illnesses can affect a tooth as well. Poor oral hygiene is another reason people are missing a tooth. Regardless of why the tooth is no longer there, our Playa Del Rey dentist looks to your current health, bone strength, and oral treatment plan when determining if dental implants will work for your situation.
Is a Dental Implant my Best Option?
Typically, yes. A dental implant most closely resembles a natural tooth. It is a single unit that looks, feels, and functions like a normal tooth. This means brushing and flossing, eating, and talking are no different than if you had all of your permanent teeth. The crown is designed to match the color of your enamel; blending in perfectly with your smile. Other procedures are available when a tooth is missing, but the strength, longevity, and appearance of a dental implant is unbeatable.
